TGI is proud to join the Cloud Native Geospatial Forum

Dec 11, 2024

We’re excited to announce that the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) has joined the Cloud Native Geospatial Forum (CNG). CNG promotes cloud-based, collaborative approaches to geospatial data, making it more accessible, scalable, and cost-effective. TGI’s investment in CNG provides an avenue for participation and learning to our consortium members.

TGI’s vision is to spark a revolution in geospatial science and technology to address global challenges. TGI’s participation in CNG reflects its commitment to advancing open and reproducible science and building a geospatially focused Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) to support researchers and innovators in leveraging the cloud for their large geospatial projects.

Cloud-native geospatial methods provide fast, scalable data access through RESTful APIs, while data providers benefit from reduced maintenance and widely shared, cloud-based storage that supports applications including AI/ML and foundation models. Much of this data is now available in analysis-ready formats like Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs (COGs), enabling direct, efficient use. With vast amounts of remote-sensing data—such as satellite imagery and LiDAR—now hosted in the cloud, these practices simplify data access, processing, and analysis, transforming how we explore and understand the world and advancing reproducible science.

“The Cloud Native Geospatial Forum could not have come at a better time for TGI. Cloud-native geospatial technology is one of the pillars of our mission to create a scalable, open, and FAIR collaborative research infrastructure that empowers our researchers to deliver repeatable and reproducible science,” said Nadine Alameh, Executive Director at TGI. “We look forward to being part of this community and partnering with its members to apply geospatial research and innovation in addressing the complex challenges of our time!”

“We are thrilled to welcome TGI and its consortium members to CNG,” said Jed Sundwall, Executive Director of CNG. TGI is uniquely positioned to train the next generation of geospatial experts, and we’re eager to help them learn from and contribute to the cloud-native geospatial community. We fully expect many fruitful collaborations to emerge from TGI’s contributions to our community of geospatial data users from across government, academia, enterprises, and startups.”
