Researchers using Earth observation data at eight institutions are encouraged to apply
St. Louis, MO — The Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) is pleased to announce a new round of its Planet Fellowship program, aimed at advancing innovative research using Earth observation data. Supported through its partnership with Planet Labs PBC (NYSE:PL), the initiative highlights TGI’s commitment to fostering the next generation of geospatial researchers and promoting geospatial solutions for global challenges.
Through the Planet Fellowship program, four exceptional graduate researchers from TGI consortium institutions will be awarded $10,000 each to support their work. Fellows will be chosen from the ranks of researchers who are leveraging satellite imagery provided by Planet to address critical issues in climate impact, food systems & security, the built environment, and disaster response, among other fields. The Fellowships are made possible through generous financial support from Planet.
“TGI’s partnership with Planet empowers researchers with access to advanced Earth observation data and tools,” said TGI Executive Director Nadine Alameh. “This fellowship provides financial support that equips geospatial scholars with resources to make an even greater impact using Planet data.”
The Planet Fellowship program underscores TGI’s leadership in geospatial science and its mission to spark a revolution in geospatial science and technology. Scholars, including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, from TGI consortium institutions are encouraged to apply with information about how they are using Planet imagery to generate new insights and how fellowship support will strengthen their work.
“Planet’s support through the fellowship played an important role in part of my research,” said Supria Sarkar, a doctoral researcher at Saint Louis University and Planet Fellow from the first round of awards. “Getting access to Earth observation data for my work has been an empowering and rewarding experience.”
A notice of opportunity for the Planet Fellowship has been posted and applications are now open. Submissions are accepted until March 31, 2025 and are assessed using criteria including Innovation in Geospatial Science, Societal Impact & Relevance, Project Design & Feasibility, and Effective Use of Planet Data
